Ignasi Gil visited Ibiza for the first time in the 30s, and he was fascinated by the sight of all the white and the peasant women’s dresses. He painted genre landscapes all over the island and portraits of peasants in the impressionist style, which sought spontaneity in the brushstrokes, movement and luminosity. In modern art, urban landscapes form a substantial part of the art scene, creating a subset of traditional landscape painting, which seeks to capture the natural environment. Some artists are attracted by the poetry of small villages that retain the charm of yesteryear. In the case of Mediterranean towns, the impact of light on white walls offers immense chromatic and representational possibilities.
