This coin was minted in 193, just after Septimius Severus defeated one of the rivals for the imperial throne, Didius Julianus, in order to reward the loyalty of his soldiers. Hence the allusion to the emperor’s liberality (Liberalitas Augusti) mentioned in the legend on the reverse.

On the obverse, laureate bust of Septimius Severus, surrounded by the legend IMP(erator) CAE(sar) L(ucius) SEP(timius) SEV(erus) PERT(inax) AVG(ustus) and a beaded rim. On the reverse, figure of the goddess Liberalitas holding an abacus in her right hand and a cornucopia in her left. Surrounding the figure, the legend LIBERAL(itas) AVG(usti) CO(n)S(ul) and a very deteriorated beaded rim.

Minted by Septimius Severus, Roman emperor.
