Brother of the landscape artist Josep Amat, he did architecture during the years that Lluís Domènech i Montaner was director. An outstanding draughtsman and watercolourist, and passionate about the sea and boats, he opted for marine themes, coastal landscapes, views of ports, boats and ships. After the Civil War he obtained a permit to study sailing on large vessels abroad. In 1942 he embarked with a sailboat on a trading route through the Mediterranean in order to paint scenes at sea.
