Gimeno’s realism was troppo vero, linked to his life and everyday reality: the family and himself of whom many self-portraits have survived. The environment was the direct source of the artist’s subjects, and for economic reasons he always had to use models from his family. Outside the domestic sphere, he could never provide them. Far removed from the portraits of bourgeois women dressed in silk and tulle, we find the portrait of a working-class woman in the living room of a house in the suburbs. With a great ability for drawing, his work in the realist style is all his own and characterised by rough strokes and harsh texture. In addition to self-portraits, his works also include portraits of the people around him, which are a strong departure from the other portraits and landscapes, and they constitute an autonomous, dramatic and sometimes sombre series.
