This coin commemorates the granting of the title Augusta (empress) to Julia Domna. Imperial consorts did not acquire the status of empress when their husbands took the throne, but rather they had to be expressly appointed by their spouses. The mention, on the reverse, of Venus Victoriosa relates to the love that the couple professed for each other throughout their lives and to the fact that Julia accompanied her husband on all his military campaigns, giving him good advice concerning the war.

On the obverse, draped bust of Empress Julia Domna, surrounded by the legend IVLIA DOMNA AVG(usta) and a beaded rim. On the reverse, Venus facing backwards and semi-nude, leaning on a small column with a globe in her right hand and a palm in her left. Surrounding the figure, the legend VENERI VICTR(ix) and a beaded rim.

Minted by Septimius Severus, Roman emperor, in honour of his wife, Julia Domna.
