Lucius Aelius was adopted by Hadrian and named heir to the throne in 136 AD. However, he never took the throne as he died two years later, shortly before his adopted father.

On the obverse, bust of Lucius Aelius, surrounded by the legend L(ucius) AELIVS CAESAR and a beaded rim. On the reverse, figure of the goddess Pietas, veiled, with a box of incense in her left hand, making a sacrifice before an altar with garlands. Surrounding the figure, the legend TRIB(unitia) POT(estate) CO(n)S(ul) II and a beaded rim.
