Prolific painter of the 18th century, his father was a gilder of religious altarpieces. He worked with an active workshop in Barcelona, at the service of the church, religious orders and many monastic commissions, as well as the new affluent social class after the War of Succession.

The war marked a before and after in the evolution of the arts in Catalonia. Connoisseur of the previous artistic tradition and atmosphere of the court of Archduke Charles of Austria, he took over from the generation of painters who died in the siege and became the main point of reference.

A painter committed to the intellectual freedom of his trade, he demonstrated his struggle against the guild impositions of the College of Painters of Barcelona to be able to exercise freely. Previously considered a workshop work, a more detailed analysis and greater knowledge of the painter’s work have restored it as an autograph work.

Adoration of the shepherds belongs to a series about the childhood of Jesus and comes from the convent of Sant Agustí, which was one of the richest in Barcelona until it was demolished to make way for the Citadel.
